On October 24, 2019, he lay in state in Statuary Hall at the United States Capitol, the first African American lawmaker so honored. A city and a nation paused to bear witness to a life of service.

October 25, 2019

The next day, October 25, 2019, his home-going service was held at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, the church home he never left, among the people he served all his life.
