On October 24, 2019 he lay in state at the U.S. Capitol, the first African American lawmaker so honored, and was laid to rest the next day at New Psalmist.

The next day, October 25, 2019, his home-going service was held at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, the church home he never left, among the people he served all his life.
